About the Wimberly Center

A historic building with a new purpose — serving Winder and Barrow County since 2016.

Our Story

The Wimberly Center for Community Development is housed in the historic former Winder-Barrow Middle School at 163 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Winder, Georgia — a building that has shaped generations of Barrow County families.

In 2016, Winder was recognized as a USDA Local Foods, Local Places community. That designation sparked a commitment to food access, sustainability, and hands-on education that breathed new life into this beloved building.

Today, the Wimberly Center operates as a collaborative hub — bringing together nonprofits, community organizations, and service providers to serve residents across Winder, Barrow County, and Northeast Georgia.

Operating in a USDA-designated food desert, we work to make fresh, nutritious food accessible to every Winder family through gardens, kitchens, and education.

The WHA manages affordable housing programs for Winder and Barrow County, including Public Housing, PBRA, and Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers. Operates from this same building.
